Witch hunt in Salem AGAIN?!?!?

Hey Everyone!

It's been awhile since we've spoken, but I brought you another book review. Yaaaay!

"The Fifth Petal" by Brunonia Barry, 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. On Goodreads I can't give .5's so I have it rated at 3, but the overall Goodreads rates the book at 3.68. Which isn't bad. Never had heard of Brunonia Barry, the first book of hers I've read and it wasn't bad.
Cover Paperback Published September 26, 2017
It was 1989 on Halloween when a horrific scene had happened. It seemed like a ritual gone wrong. A little girl, Callie Cahill, hidden in the bushes was found by Nuns, crying and gripping something tightly. Three young women, "The Goddess", were slashed to death. Townspeople believed Rose Whelan, a local historian, is guilty of murder or witchcraft. Now 2014, Cheif Rafferty and Callie, daughter of one of The Goddess, believe she didn't do it. They try to find the truth of what happened on Halloween in 1989. Is there truly witches in Salem or someone taking vengeance of the girls?

Let's talk about the characters I like, which are John Rafferty, Callie Cahill, and Rose Whalen. Yes, they're the main characters, but there are others which weren't that interesting to me. Rafferty, Cheif of Police, someone you can trust, he tries his hardest to stay civil when it comes to his job. He wants to make sure everyone gets a fair judgment, but when he believes someone is innocent, he'll try his hardest to prove it. He wanted to solve the cold case of "The Goddess", noticed no one really wanted to solve it, so he went at it alone. Callie, daughter of Oliva one of The Goddess, a woman who lost her family and those closest to her as a young child, but when she finds out her "Auntie" Rose is still alive and struggling she came into town to find her. When she did, it was worse than she thought. Rose, stamped as the banshee, is accused by the town of murder or possibly witchcraft, ever since 1989, she hasn't been the same, became mentally unstable and became the crazy lady of the town. Rafferty and Callie are trying they're most damn to find the answers to all the questions. The Goddess, Callie, and Rose are all related to the five who were executed during the witch trial of 1692. I don't  know what exactly makes me like these characters, but they were so interesting to me. It may be because Rafferty tries to give the benefit of the doubt of people. Callie, stubborn she may be, but she fights for the only family she has left. Rose, well it's Rose, the historian part of her, the quotes she has and she's just weirdly awesome to me.

The story, it's not a bad story, like I said I did enjoy it. Would I reread this book? No. It wasn't something I was amazed by. I loved the idea of combining past witchery and modern-day witchery, but I was hoping for more of it. There were parts when I forgot this was a "witch" story. Did it claim it was a full-on witch story? No, but it hinted it was. Hence, I was hoping for more of the modern-day witchery. All and all there were scenes I did like reading about. There's a part where they were having Thanksgiving and Rose was outside with a tree, didn't want to go in just wanted to stay with the tree. So the owner of the home said to move the celebration outside so Rose can join as well. Or the TRUTH scene, which I will not tell you, cause then that's a spoiler. Not doing that.

Prices! Now is it worth the price...for me no, if this was a 4 or a 5-star rating then yes, but this isn't the case. I've said this before and I will say it again. Don't just go by what I say. You may have a different view of it and you may like it more than I have. You never know.
